Social Security - 6 Bush's latest proposal to means-test Social Security payments is yet another attempt to undermine middle-class support for Social Security. |
If 70% of Social Security recipients receive reduced payments based on their income, Social Security will come to be regarded as a welfare program rather than a pension program. This will erode middle-class support for Social Security.
An Associated Press-Ipsos poll earlier this month found 37% of Americans support Bush's handling of Social Security, while 59% disapprove. Those numbers hadn't budged after more than four months of the president barnstorming the U.S. to sell his plan to create private accounts in Social Security.
