The American media has a conservative bias, not a liberal bias.
The liberal bias in the media is a myth. There is certainly no liberal bias in my local newspaper, the Dallas Morning News. I can’t remember the last time they endorsed a Democratic candidate in a major election. The FOX NEWS network is run by Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, a former Reagan aid. To date there is no news network whose content is dictated by a well known partisan Democrat.

The Democratic Party traditionally attracts lower and working class people into it’s ranks. The executives and CEOs who run the large newspapers, news magazines, news networks, network news departments, and affiliate news departments are typically not the core Democratic constituency.

I don’t know how you can determine if rank-and-file reporters vote more heavily Democratic. I guess you could conduct a poll, but how would you assemble the sample pool, and how would the questions be presented and arranged? In any case, let’s assume that you can, for the sake of the discussion, establish that more reporters vote Democratic than Republican. Most of us spend our days doing our jobs. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to devote ourselves to a full-time study of current events and the people involved in the decision making. But that’s what reporters do. They have the opportunity to dig into the issues in much more depth than most of us who settle for a superficial pass through the morning paper or a TV news show. They DO have the opportunity to study current events full time. They are the best informed among voters. So it should be no surprise to learn that most of them do vote Democrat. That’s not an indictment of the party. Just the opposite. It says that among people that make the most detailed study of our government and its actions, most vote Democrat. That is an endorsement, not a condemnation.

I think it comes back to press coverage. Just this weekend, I was looking at something: There's an enormous scandal right now involving Boeing and a federal contract, which appears to have been overpaid by $4 billion. The Pentagon official who was responsible for the contract has now left and has become a top executive at Boeing. And it's been barely covered in the press –- a couple of stories on inside pages. You compare that with the White House travel office in 1993. There were accusations, later found to be false, that the Clintons had intervened improperly to dismiss a couple of employees in the White House travel office.

That was the subject, in the course of one month, of three front-page stories in the Washington Post. So if people don't understand how badly things are being managed now, and have an unduly negative sense of how things were managed in the Clinton years, well, there in a nutshell is your explanation.

As of last May, the top 44 radio stations of 50,000 watts and above owned by the five largest ownership groups carried 312 hours of nationally syndicated conservative talk and five hours of nationally syndicated liberal talk, according to statistics quoted at a Senate hearing.

Judith Miller [is] a reporter for The New York Times whose front-page articles about Saddam Hussein's forbidden weapons were so influential in driving America to war.

For years, Ms. Miller has enjoyed privileges that newspapers usually permit only to opinion columnists. She openly aligned herself with organizations and individuals promoting aggressive, unilateral military solutions to the problems of the Middle East. She joined the same lecture agency that arranged paid speeches for former Defense Policy Board member Richard Perle and other like-minded neocons. She co-authored a book with Laurie Mylroie, an academic whose conspiracy theories about Iraq are widely regarded as loony.

More important than her curious associations, however, is the fact that the stories she wrote supported the propaganda line taken by her sources and associates. In their apologia, the Times editors pointed toward "a circle of Iraqi informants, defectors and exiles bent on 'regime change' in Iraq, people whose credibility has come under increasing public debate in recent weeks." That too is only a partial truth. The circle of misleaders encompasses Americans as well as Iraqis, and may be said to include Ms. Miller herself.

CBS, for instance, recently didn’t allow MoveOn.org ads during the Super Bowl, and CBS canceled the airing of a movie about Ronald Reagan because of opposition from the right wing. NBC will not provide tapes of an interview with Bush to a fellow documentary maker, Robert Greenwald, for a film he’s doing because it’s embarrassing to Bush. In other words, they won’t provide footage of a public appearance by Bush on "Meet the Press" to a documentary maker. Disney, which owns ABC, prohibits Miramax from distributing Michael Moore’s documentary. All this cross-ownership is serving a censorship function for basically one political perspective and one political party -- the Republican Party.

The only reason that Arnold Schwarzenegger was taken seriously by the California electorate while the other "joke" candidates were not is that he was presented as a serious candidate by the news media. If he were presented as just another "joke" candidate by the news media (which he was), then California voters would not have taken him seriously.
