Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tx) perpetuated the standard Republican lie on the Senate floor in early August 2006 with her comment regarding the estate tax.
Senator Hutchison said, "We are turning out backs on the middle class and the poor people of this country who depend on minimum wage and 'death tax' relief."

The bill that Senator Hutchison lied about would have raised the inheritance amount that the estate tax (which she erroneously called "the death tax") to $5 million for single people or $10 million for couples.

Anyone that has that much money to leave to their offspring is inherently not a part of "the middle class and the poor."

This statement is very typical of the Republican effort to convince middle and working class people that the Republican party is their advocate while they systematically shift the tax burden from unearned income to wages. Either they should come out and say that they are cutting taxes for the aristocracy, or they should shut up and sit down

What's so sad is that too many truly middle class and poor people fall for this line of marlarky. Why shouldn't those who have benefited most from this country give a little back? Many of them, the Paris Hilton types, have done nothing to earn their millions. Linda
