America is not engaged in a WAR in Iraq, we are engaged in an OCCUPATION. (They are not the same thing.) | |
In a war, a military force confronts another military force in order to achieve a specific objective. In an occupation, a military force restrains a civilian population in order to control events in a society for an indeterminate period of time. |

The word "war" gets thrown around a lot: war on terrorism, war on drugs, war on poverty, war in Iraq, etc. Americans are usually appalled to hear about one country occupying another and we've taken steps to stop other occupations, but not when it is the US doing the deed. And, we aren't even doing a very good job of occupation, considering we aren't restraining the civilian population from blowing up themselves and US soldiers. | Linda Denton |
