The Bush administration should NEVER have been allowed to divert the nation into discussing the merits of the surge. The surge is irrelevant.
Allow an analogy...

If you come home and your garage has been broken into, and someone says "Bill did it!," you go out and find Bill and you start kicking his ass.

But what do you do if the guy sees this and runs up and says "NO! Not that Bill…Bill Smith…a different guy. You’ve got the wrong guy."?

Do you say "It doesn't matter what happened in the past. It doesn't matter how we got here. We're here now. I'm kicking his ass and I'm not going to "SURRENDER!" "THESE COLORS DON'T RUN!" In fact, I'm calling my buddies to help me. It will be a "SURGE." Now…should I have one guy hold him and two of us beat him, or should I have two of us hold him and one of us beat him? How could our "SURGE" be most effective?"

"But that's all irrelevant. …YOU'VE GOT THE WRONG GUY!"

"Yes, but that's all in the past now. It doesn't matter what happened in the garage any more. I must achieve "VICTORY." I'm not going to "CUT-AND-RUN!"

"But just stop and listen for a minute…YOU'VE GOT THE WRONG GUY!"

"But if I don't FIGHT HIM HERE, I'LL HAVE TO FIGHT HIM AT HOME!"

"What??? That doesn't even make sense!"

"Are you saying that I should "SURRENDER?" I don't do that! I'm going to kick this guys ass until I "WIN!"

...

And on and on it goes.

The Iraqis never attacked us. We have no right to be there in the first place.

This whole circus with the general and the ambassador testifying in front of congress is just a distraction. It doesn't matter how well or how badly the occupation is faring. (And it's faring badly.)

"Victory", "defeat", 'cut-and-run", "surrender" are all irrelevant. We have made a terrible mistake going into Iraq in the first place. The only recourse for us right now is to back out and apologize.

But America (or rather, some Americans) are too proud and too insecure to ever admit a mistake. Instead, we (or some of us) are still so blinded by rage and frustration over 9/11 that we can't think of anything but revenge and retribution. And even with our friends (the French, the Germans, etc.) telling us "Stop….you're making a mistake. You've got the wrong guy," we continue to pummel the Iraqis year after year after year.

And our president is a 60 year old child that has never been told "no" by anyone in his life. He isn't emotionally mature enough to begin to deal with this issue.

The Democrats are not trying to pull us out of a just war because it's going badly. The Democrats are trying to pull us out of the war because it was never justified to begin with.
