Spot The Irony:

Some modern-day Latin American theologians have lamented the destruction of indigenous civilizations and sought to incorporate elements of those cultures into the Mass as one way of making amends. But in a statement likely to be controversial in countries with large Indian populations, including Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador, [Pope Benedict XVI] rejected that approach.

“The utopia of going back to breathe life into the pre-Columbus religions, separating them from Christ and from the universal church, would not be a step forward; indeed, it would be a step back” and “a retreat towards a stage in history anchored in the past.”

"During the first Christian millennium the Cross was planted in Europe and during the second in the American continent and in Africa," the German-born [Pope Benedict XVI] wrote.

"During the third millennium a great harvest of faith will be reaped in the vast and vibrant Asian continent."

The Pope is living in a bubble. First of all, the influence if the church has been decreasing rapidly in Europe since the advent of the Enlightenment and will continue its decline in the Americas as well. As far as a "great harvest" taking place in Asia during the third millennium…when is Jesus supposed to return anyway??? Is that at least another 1000 years away? At what point does the fundamental tenant of Christianity appear absurd?

Not to thrash an individual (or an institution) that is such an easy foil, but isn't this guy the intellectual descendent of the people who imprisoned Galileo for saying the earth revolves around the sun? Pul-eese! (Another reminder why we don't want the church to have the power to arrest, try and imprison people!)
