Americans own 3% of the worlds oil reserves, but consume 25% of the worlds oil supply. Drilling offshore or in ANWR won't fix that. Dropping cluster bombs on poor people in the middle east won't fix that.

We can't "drill and kill" our way out of our energy predicament.
We Americans don't like to consider this, but the only way to solve this problem is to curb our gluttony. That means that we Americans...ALL of us...must work towards redesigning our energy consuming systems so that we use substantially less oil. That means we give up our big gas guzzlers for electric cars, and, where practical, eventually give up our electric cars for mass transportation. That means we generate electricity with solar and wind rather than oil and natural gas. It means that as we use the ingenuity for which we are know around the world to find solutions for these problems, we share them with the rest of the world. And finally, it means we Americans...all of us...must consume much less energy.

Even if some huge oil deposit magically appeared within our geographic sphere, if we converted it to carbon by burning it, we would only contribute to the ticking time bomb of global warming.

The sooner that we turn and face these fundamental facts, the sooner we can begin to find real solutions to our energy problems. If we make the right choice this fall, that process will begin next year.

We could have done all this in the 1970's, but no. If we had, who can guess how the world would have changed? We probably wouldn't be groveling to OPEC now. OPEC may not even exist. But the oil and gas companies haven't figured out a way to own the sun and wind yet; when they do, there will be solar panels and windmills all over the planet. Linda

It may be a fraud now, but oil will run out. No more is being made. Therefore, it seems shortsighted to just keep on drilling for and burning oil now, then panicking when it does run out. I may not be alive when it happens, but it will happen. Linda
