The recent debt reduction bill created a "super congress" committee of 12 that has been assigned to come up with over $1 trillion in spending cuts. If they fail, a provision in the bill will trigger automatic spending cuts of over $1 trillion. The whole thing is just theater.
Here's what will actually happen:
  • The 6 Democrats and 6 Republicans will fail to come to an agreement on new revenues and cuts to social programs.
  • The automatic cuts will be triggered.
  • Congress will spend the fall and winter inventing loopholes to prevent the spending cuts from taking effect.
  • Congress and the president will extend all of the Bush tax cuts.
  • The status quo will continue and the deficit will continue to grow.
