Therapeutic cloning should be allowed and even funded by government.
One side argues that we must have a philosophical debate regarding the ethics of human cloning, even for therapeutic applications. The other argues that research in therapeutic cloning could lead to breakthroughs in the treatment of debilitating maladies that are suffered by wide swaths of the population. Most of us are affected at some point in our lives. While the philosophical debate may be important and perhaps should be engaged, it is not nearly as urgent as the treatment of people whose quality of life is severely denigrated and whose lives are ticking away quickly as we debate. The urgency of the argument for cloning research outweighs the urgency of the argument against it.

In addition, the technology exists and cannot be made to "unexist." The research will be carried out somewhere. Countries who embrace and support it will have an advantage as the research yields medical treatments. The U.S. should strive to ensure that these advances take place within our sphere of influence.

The need for medical treatments is more urgent than the need for a philosophical debate. The technology will be developed inevitably, with or without us. We should support therapeutic cloning.
