The primary purpose of the major news outlets from which we get most of our information (newspapers, television, magazines) is to serve as vehicles for advertising.
When compiling news that will serve to attract "eyeballs" for advertisers, editors are encouraged to select and slant stories so that their publications and broadcasts attract an "upscale" audience with disposable income that may be spent on advertisers products.

Editors are discouraged from producing material that will present industries in an unfavorable light.

Most of the major newspapers are owned by very rich families.

Most of the major networks are owned by big corporations.. For example, NBC is owned by General Electric, a major defense contractor.

Many board members of the major news outlets also serve on the boards of major corporations.
